DESCRIPTION:

With more than 3 billion names and 4,000 searchable databases, Ancestry.com is the #1 online source for family history information, including the web's largest collection of historical records. Search databases including exclusive information you won't find anywhere else on the web:

US Federal Census Records  543,000,000+ names
   US Immigration Collection  21,000,000+ names
Social Security Death Index  72,000,000+ names
   Newspaper Archives  850,000,000+ names
   Family Trees  330,000,000+ names

The Ancestry Library is the best collection of family history how-to and genealogy learning materials on the Internet. Browse or search the archives of Ancestry Magazine, the Ancestry Daily News, Genealogical Computing, and popular Ancestry.com online columnists. For additional expert help with your family history, visit their genealogy training sites.

In addition, they provide a quick and easy family tree which you can put together in no time. A good family tree is an excellent way to begin discovering and organizing your family story. The best place to begin is by entering what you know about yourself and immediate family. As you enter this information, their software begins to build your tree automatically. There is a registration process, but it's free.

PROS:

This is the cream of the genealogy research crop on the Internet. It's hard to find a better collection of databases, tools, and educational materials all on a single site.

CONS:

There's plenty to check out on the website, so it's easy to spend a big chunk of time just poking around without actually getting any work done on your family tree.  And as you'll probably find with most Internet genealogy sites, it takes time to figure out exactly what to do and how to do it.

SUMMARY:

Anyone serious about researching their family's ancestry will want to make this one of their primary resources.  For someone just starting out, doing a little dabbling and not sure how serious he or she is yet, this is probably more than you'll need. If you aren't sure which you are, they do provide a free trial, so you can give the system a thorough test before deciding if it's right for you or not.
